Maple Creek Bluegrass was formed in 1997 when Brad arrived
in Edmonton, Alberta from Newport, Tennessee and went looking for fellow Bluegrass musicians.
Dawn was preparing her
band "Blue Skies"
for a performance at the Blueberry Bluegrass Festival and asked Brad to join them. "We knew right away that
there was something special in the blend of our voices," said Dawn. "It was like we had been singing
together for years." A few name changes followed; the band became "Maple
Creek" and Dawn later became Mrs. Oviatt.
The 2000 release of
the self-titled Maple Creek CD brought the band international attention with excellent reviews and worldwide radio
airplay. Increasingly in demand, Maple Creek shared their unique brand of Bluegrass on television, radio, in live
performances and at workshops across Canada. Maple Creek was pleased to host the successful Canadian Rockies Bluegrass
Festival in 2004 and a sold out festival in 2005.
The second Maple Creek CD, One Good Reason, was released in 2004. Mandolin wizard Emory Lester both co-produced and performed on
the CD, which featured eight original songs. In 2004 Maple Creek toured coast-to-coast, from the Sooke River Festival
on Vancouver Island, British Columbia to the Rollo Bay and Evangeline Festivals on Prince Edward Island. The fall
brought performances at the Canadian Country Music Awards and the Western Canadian Country Music Awards.
In 2007, after relocating to the suburban Atlanta area, Brad and Dawn launched the newest incarnation of Maple
Creek Bluegrass by adding two highly respected members of the North Georgia bluegrass community to the band; Dale
Roberts on bass and bass vocals and Joe Coffey on banjo, guitar and harmony vocals.
A subsequent personnel change brought the remarkable talents and road experience of Kevin Bowen on banjo and baritone
vocals. Kevin just concluded a two year term with Paul Williams and the Victory Trio.
The new Maple Creek is preparing for a third CD to be recorded shortly, will perform select engagements in 2008
and is now booking for 2009.
